Some days, it doesn’t need to be complicated. We were both starving. Neither one of us wanted to get out of our pjs and go to the market. I took inventory of the refrigerator. Frozen waffles. Fruit. Butter. Perfect. Waffle sandwiches. I didn’t even have to use a skillet or pans for this meal. E barely had enough time to brush his teeth before breakfast was served.
We were so hungry we didn’t even speak to each other as we ate. That’s one of the great things about being in a great relationship. Comfortable silence. When you can sit on the couch or ride in a car with someone for an afternoon and not say a word and be totally at ease. When you can read the same newspaper together section by section over a few hours and the only words muttered between you are, “can you pass the advertisements?” Or when one can tell the other “I love you” with just a raise of an eyebrow or a wink of an eye.
Or with the phrase, “can you pass the syrup?”
4 waffles
1/2 cup strawberries
1/2 cup blackberries
1/4 cup syrup
2 tbsp butter
Toast waffles. Place two on plate. Spread lightly with butter. Slice berries. Sprinkle berries on top. Top with another waffle. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar if desired.
