Our Fourth of July—also known as my birthday—was country fabulous.

I hate saying good-bye
to the weekend. Here’s to a great fourth.
Sandwich #141—“CrossFit Unfriendly” Sugar and Spice Ice Cream Sandwich
Ice cream sandwiches are not a Breakfast of Champions. They’re filled with sugar and offer little caffeine or protein or other nutrients (maybe dairy. But that’s really all). They’re so not the ideal breakfast for a boyfriend who just came back from CrossFit.
Sandwich #140–“You Make the Birthday Plans” Turkey Burgers with Bacon
My friends want me to have a birthday party for myself, but then I end up having to make the plans. I don’t want to do any work to enjoy my birthday. Instead, I’ll make E do it.
Sandwich #139–“July 4th Celebration” Lobster Sliders
July 4th is a special day at our house. Not only is it America’s birthday, it’s mine, too.
Sandwich #138– “I Forgot About It” Lamb Meatball Sandwiches
Rating: I found a recipe for lamb meatballs that was so easy to make, I had dinner ready in 20 minutes, which put me on the couch in time to watch “House Hunters” on HGTV. We had leftovers, so I made E another sandwich for lunch.
Hot Dog: Sandwich or Not a Sandwich?
From Wikipedia: “A hot dog is a fully cooked sausage, traditionally grilled or steamed. It is typically served as a sandwich in a sliced bun, as a corn dog dipped in corn batter and deep fried, or as an ingredient in other dishes like beanie weenies. It is often garnished with mustard, ketchup, onions, mayonnaise, […]
Sandwich #137–“Lunch, From Me to You” Mozzarella and Olive Tapenade on Pita
I did something that I’ve never done for E. I sent him off to work with homemade lunch.
Sandwich #136–“Thanks for Thinking of Me” Italian Burger with Pesto
“There’s wind tomorrow,” E declared. “We’re going to the beach.”
Sandwich #135–“Quickie Before Dinner” Mini Pretzel Ice Cream Sandwich
There’s nothing better than a nap in the middle of the day on the weekend. On a crisp, warm Saturday in New York, E and were holed up inside, dozing off on the couch. And not even together, cuddled up at the same time. We took naps in shifts.
Failed!
It happens—a sandwich doesn’t turn out the way you want it. E and I went to Cross Fit together this morning, and as a post workout breakfast, we were going to make protein crepes filled with fruit for breakfast. But they didn’t come together. Protein crepe crumbs was what we were left with. “I’ll make […]
Sandwiches #132, 133 and 134: “Still Sexy” Fruit and Peanut Butter Wraps
The Sexy Project is working! Yesterday, E and I went to an event in Central Park, for which I wore a form fitting black dress with very low cut cleavage and sky high suede Miu Miu pumps. I was working a sexy 1920’s flapper look with my hair in an updo, and the dress’ below […]
Sandwich #131–“The Sexy Back Project” Sweet and Sour Sloppy Joes
Maybe I’ve been spending too much time in the kitchen. Maybe I’ve spent too much time taking care of others and not myself. But despite dating a tall attractive man who loves me, I didn’t feel…sexy.
Sandwich #130–“Weekend Productivity” Mozzarella and Homemade Pesto BLT
You can get more done with your day when you get up early. Because I was up and at ’em at 8am Saturday morning, I had coffee on the balcony with E, drove to Fairway AND nabbed the closest parking spot possible to the front door, bought enough groceries for the week, unloaded them at […]
Sandwich #129–“Growing Children” Tomato, Mozzarella and Scrambled Egg Breakfast Sandwich
E is raising the children in our herb garden to be bright, healthy young sprouts. The basil has grown into full, leafy stalks. Our dill is tall enough to come up to our knees. The mint is as big as a rose bush and our cilantro has flowered. I’m so proud of my little father. […]
Book to describe our refrigerator right now
Sandwich #128–“Summer Breakfast” Waffle Ice Cream Sandwiches
Only in the summertime can you have a ice cream waffle sandwich for breakfast. Only in the summer, only in your own kitchen (because you know your mom and dad didn’t suggest you eat Eggos this way).
Cocktail time: Mint Watermelon Coolers
It’s the weekend, the sun is shining, and it’s only appropriate that I share my watermelon cocktail recipe.
Commonly Used Phrases
What E tells me every day after work.
Sandwich #127–The “Work or Play” Bun Series: Shrimp Buns
Finally, shrimp buns. Even my vegetarian guests devoured two of these.
Sandwich #126–The “Work and Play” Bun Series: Chicken Teriyaki Buns
Continuing with our bun series from this weekend, I bring you the chicken teriyaki version. These are what I call your perfect lazy summer afternoon snack.
Sandwich #125–The “Work and Play” Bun Series: Hanger Steak
I was determined to make three sandwiches this weekend–particularly on Saturday. E wanted to go kite surfing on Sunday, tearing me away from the kitchen and computer all day. Though the weather was perfect for the beach, I had to get my laundry done, clean the house, do a mask for my face, work out […]
Sandwich #124: “You Play, I’ll Stay” Chicken Ceasar Sandwich
Here’s another difference between E and I. He is friends with just about all of his ex-girlfriends. In fact, I have met a majority of the women he’s dated because he’s either invited them to our dinner parties or taken me to their birthday bashes and Sunday brunches. I am not friends with any of […]
Old School
My favorite shirt, from my mother’s closet, circa 1975. This was the local hoagie joint in my mom’s New Jersey suburb, back before Blimpie’s and Subway moved in. This shirt has accompanied bell bottoms, skinny jeans, Levi cutoff shorts, pajama pants and running shorts over the years. Note the thin fabric from decades of wear.
