Here’s another difference between E and I. He is friends with just about all of his ex-girlfriends. In fact, I have met a majority of the women he’s dated because he’s either invited them to our dinner parties or taken me to their birthday bashes and Sunday brunches. I am not friends with any of […]

Old School
My favorite shirt, from my mother’s closet, circa 1975. This was the local hoagie joint in my mom’s New Jersey suburb, back before Blimpie’s and Subway moved in. This shirt has accompanied bell bottoms, skinny jeans, Levi cutoff shorts, pajama pants and running shorts over the years. Note the thin fabric from decades of wear.
Sandwich #123–“Throat Soothing” Ice Cream Sandwich with Graham Crackers
I was sick as a dog over the weekend. Sore throat, stuffy nose, body aches, the works. I spent more time in bed than on the beach last weekend. Not the strongest start to my summer.
Forbidden Food: Sliced Avocado
What we did this weekend: Kite surfed. Slept. Yoga. Dined with friends. Added avocado to E’s forbidden foods list.
Happy Memorial Day!
We’re about to get out of town for the holiday weekend. A vacation couldn’t come any sooner.
My New Dining Room
This is where I will be serving all sandwiches from now until the end of summer.
Sandwich #122: “You Butchered It!” Duck Pastrami on Rye
I debated posting this sandwich. When E’s reaction to the sandwich was “you butchered it!” I figured it wasn’t my best work.
Sandwich #121: “Too Tiny to Cause Guilt” Ice Cream Sandwiches
A helpful tip before I explain the sandwich: one should not go to the largest grocery store in Brooklyn while hungry.
Sandwich #120–“Miles of Love” Chicken Parmesan Sandwich
I ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon this weekend, which was an amazing but intense experience. On Saturday, I was up by 5:30 am to get over to the starting line just a short drive away. By the time I crossed the finish line in about two hours, E was there waiting with a smile.
Sandwich #119:–“If It’s Bad, We’ll Order Takeout” Mexican Turkey Burgers
We were majorly hung over. Two nights ago, we went out with well-intentioned but highly demanding friends who grilled E about the whole wedding thing. “When are you going to get married? What are you waiting for? This sandwich thing is for the birds! I’ll make you three hundred sandwiches in my kitchen this weekend! […]
Cooking Class: How to Measure
Whenever I ask E for a recipe on anything, he can tell me the ingredients, but he can’t tell me how much or how many.
Sandwich #118-“Cooking Under the Influence” Tuna Tataki Sandwiches
I should never cook drunk. Cooking under the influence is unlikely to produce tasty results.
Sandwich #117–“Sweet Sunday” Nutella Sandwich Cookies
Nutella should not be allowed in my house. It’s too tasty, too addictive, and too accessible. And it forces me to hide a shameful secret from E.
Sandwich #116–“Garden Fresh” Banh Mi Breakfast Sandwich
Friday morning! E and I got up early to sip coffee on our patio, and ponder what nice things we were going to do for our mommies for Mother’s Day Sunday. I sent a card. E did not. Who’s the better child? Ha! (Just kidding, he means well. Besides, I should really send flowers, too.)
Sandwich #115–“Don’t Just Google It” Ham with Lavander Goat Cheese, Honey and Caramelized Pecans
Ham and cheese is a good sandwich. Ham with spreadable fromage blanc, honey and caramelized pecans is a great sandwich. That is, if you know how to make carmelized pecans successfully.
Homegrown Meats
This right here is homemade duck pastrami halfway through the cooking process. Those spices, that delish brown color….makes me hungry! Sadly we can’t eat it now.
Sandwich #114–“Cinco de Mayo-ish” Mexican Torta
Rating: It was Cinco de Mayo over the weekend. For us, it’s an legitimate excuse to drink margaritas—unlike the less logical ones, like “oh we’re out of wine, so we have to drink something else, preferably with tequila.”
Master of His Domain
Friday morning, 8:25 am. E—in his morning uniform, the white robe—tends to his “little babies” in our herb garden.
Taco: Sandwich or Not a Sandwich?
I think I already know the answer to this one, but in the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, I thought I’d spark some Latin fused debate. Is a taco a sandwich?
Sandwich #113—“Patio Break” Bananas and Peanut Butter Waffle Minis
E and I have totally different morning schedules. He works until 2 am and wakes up after 8, I’m up at 6:15 am for running/blogging/cooking/cleaning/teeth whitening/hellraising. Breakfast has been shortened to a two minute meeting over the stove.
